Vicki heard crunching glass coming from the kitchen. The helicopter hovered, then flew away. Vicki gasped at the click of a rifle.

“Oh, hi there,” Shelly said.

“Hands in the air now!” a man shouted.

“What do you want with me?”

“On the floor!”

“You don’t have to be so mean,” Shelly said. “I just took some crackers.”

“Where are the others?”

“Others?”

“The radio!” a man shouted. “It gave you away.”

Shelly said, “You can have that thing. I don’t want it.”

“Where did you get it?”

Shelly filled her mouth with crackers. “This black kid comes up and asks if I’m hungry,” she said. “He could tell I was. So he says he’ll tell me where to get some food if I do him a favor.”

“Washington, sir?” a man said.

“Yeah, let her keep going.”

“There’s not much more,” Shelly said. “He said if I’d take his radio and keep it until somebody found me, he’d tell me where I could get something to eat. Crackers is all I found.”

“Was there anyone with him?” a man said.

“A girl,” Shelly said. “Redhead. Scrawny.”

“Exactly where?” a man said.

“Across the river,” Shelly said. “They headed south or west, whatever’s away from the river.”

Someone radioed the chopper.

“What do we do with the girl?” another said.

“I’ll see what Blancka says,” the leader said.

Vicki’s arms were tired from holding the picture in place.
